BREYNA® (budesonide and formoterol fumarate dihydrate)

BREYNA: FIRST FDA-APPROVED GENERIC TO SYMBICORT® Used to control asthma symptoms in those ages 6 and older. Used to improve COPD symptoms and reduce number of flare-ups in adults.

About BREYNA

BREYNA contains two types of medicines that work together to help people with asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) breathe easier:
Budesonide
This is a type of medicine called an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS). It helps reduce swelling and irritation (inflammation) in the lungs, which can make breathing easier over time.
Formoterol
This is a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA). It helps keep the muscles around the airways relaxed so they stay open, making it easier to breathe and helping prevent symptoms like wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Approved Uses

BREYNA is used to control symptoms of asthma and prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and children ages 6 and older. BREYNA contains formoterol. LABA medicines, such as formoterol, when used alone, increase the risk of death and hospitalizations from asthma problems. BREYNA contains an ICS and a LABA. When an ICS and a LABA are used together, there is not a significantly increased risk of hospitalizations and death from asthma problems. BREYNA is not for adults and children with asthma who are well controlled with an asthma-control medicine, such as a low-to-medium dose of an ICS. BREYNA is for adults and children with asthma who need both an ICS and a LABA medicine. It is not known if BREYNA is safe and effective in children less than 6 years of age with asthma.
COPD is a long-term (chronic) lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. BREYNA 160 mcg/4.5 mcg is used long term, as 2 inhalations 2 times each day, to improve symptoms of COPD for better breathing and to reduce the number of flare-ups (the worsening of your COPD symptoms for several days).

Frequently Asked Questions

You should not use BREYNA if:

  • You are having an acute asthma or COPD episode that requires immediate intensive treatment.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in BREYNA.

Some of the more commonly reported side effects include:

  • For asthma patients: throat irritation, upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, back pain, stomach discomfort, thrush in the mouth and throat, headache, throat pain, flu, nasal congestion, and vomiting.
  • For COPD patients: throat irritation, thrush in the mouth and throat, bronchitis, sinusitis, and upper respiratory tract infection.

If you notice any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away, talk with your healthcare provider. These are not all the possible side effects of BREYNA.

Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you:

  • Have ever had breathing episodes requiring urgent treatment (so you know whether BREYNA is right for your situation)
  • Are using any other inhaled medications (especially other LABAs)
  • Have infections, immune system problems, tuberculosis, or fungal/viral/bacterial/parasitic lung disease
  • Have heart, blood pressure, bone-health, eye (glaucoma/cataracts), or thyroid problems
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Are taking medications that affect your breathing, heart, or metabolism (such as beta-blockers, strong antifungals, or other medications affecting the same pathways)

If you miss a dose, take the next dose at the scheduled time (do not double up). Using too many inhalations or using other LABAs in addition may increase the risk of serious side effects (including heart or breathing issues).

If you have used more than prescribed (overdose) or have worsening symptoms, contact your healthcare provider or seek medical help.
